Hello Amazing Families of Mr. Richards’ Class,

Welcome to the 604 Family.  Ours is an exciting room where learning happens, risks are taken, struggle is celebrated and students develop a level of knowledge through perseverance and confidence they didn’t know was possible.  I’m so lucky to have been selected to be your child’s teacher.  What an adventure we are about to embark on.

A little about me.  I’m a humble father of three amazing almost and kinda adult children (20, 17, 15).  My wife is a wonderful kinder teacher at Rock Creek. We have both been in Tahoma for 6 years now and know this is home.  We are very busy soccer, golf, softball parents, so I appreciate your weekdays being a touch hectic.  When not watching sports or Star Wars, I love to golf, play volleyball, garden, and work outside.

I’m in my 30th year in education, sixth here at Glacier.  In my time, I have taught all grades kindergarten thru 6th grade with many years of multi-age (3 grades in one class), but 4th is my favorite.  I also spent 10 years as an elementary school principal.  I believe my background gives me a lot of “seasoning” to support your children and differentiate for their needs.  Every one of them is unique and brings special talents, strengths, and gifts to our family here.  I can’t wait to get to know them and support their journey in 4th grade.

Our room is very important to me and I want it to be for your child as well.  We will spend 36 weeks and 10 months together.  If you could, please send in a photo of your family to adorn around our room, that would be fantastic.  It serves two purposes.  One, it gives them ownership of their room, making it truly theirs as well.  Two, in case of lockdown or unintended prolonged stay at school, they will have a part of you with them and they can have the picture as comfort if needed.  Thanks for your efforts to make this happen.  Let me know if you need help and we can take a picture at school on the Meet and Greet and I will happily print it for you and put it into a frame.

Speaking of Meet and Greet, I hope you will all be able to come Monday, the 28th, 4:00-5:00, at Glacier Park to visit our classroom.  We are in room 604, the collection of portables to the left of the shed as you walk outside.  Please have your student bring any school supplies and we will find their home in our room.  I do not do shared supplies.  Also, students can select a spot to sit, a chair to sit in, and a couple books to start the year off with, while we get to know each other and visit.

I’m excited to meet you Monday and get started on our first day of school Wednesday.  I hope they are ready for a great adventure.  Thank you ahead of time for your support, volunteerism, and sense of connection this upcoming school year.  I certainly can’t do this without you.

Humbly,

Eric Richards
